Long live Windows 7

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7695933.stm

I think I am about to declare vista dead. Long live Windows 7.. Hopefully it will follow in the foot steps of Windows Server group because the server poducts seem to be getting better and better. As server/network admin though it means I am never going to be able to sell Vista at the business level, windows XP is going to rule until 7 has been released, this I have to say is a mistake on MS part if they are not seriously going to release 7 in the next 2 years, because peak shows like this just mean I have no chance of actually convincing someone in a business to spend money in a vista direction..Lets not even talk about the cloud...MS you really need to start delivering and show a real long term position rather than following the latest trend, your are effecting your long term partnership positions.

Vista and MSN Messanger and 81000306

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Since I have installed Vista I have not been able to get MSN Messanger working I have shouted screamed, reinstalled, uninstalled, google, yahooed, Msn and generally scratched my head. It turned into my pet project everytime I got bored with a bit of coding to have another go. Well today has not been the best of days but I thought I would have another crack at it. Last hour I have destroyed my network and reinstalled it to still no available so I thought I would have another crack at Google. I found this page today .

http://www.vista64.net/forums/vista-general/26735-msn-messenger-wont-login-81000306-a.html

Which had this solution:
Try this:-
Click start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click cmd.exe when it appears under Applications
- Click Run As Administrator
- Type the following: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
- Press enter
- Restart your computer

.. It worked a treat. If I ever meet David McGown or the people who run vista64.net I will buy them a beer. Horrah.
Only one more thing left to conquer now on vista which is burning a CD... ;-)

Enabling ASP and IIS in Vista

Thursday, February 8, 2007

So I thought I would blog on this one as I had a nightmare this morning finding this.

So the first thing that you want is IIS 7 installed.
Control Panel ->
(If you are in Classic View change it back to Control Panel Home)
Programs -> Under the Program and Features list click on "Turn Windows features on or off"
Select "Internet Information Services"
Open the tree to show a more detailed view of the items under it.
Open the node "World Wide Web Services"

Open the node "Application Development Features"

Select "ASP"

*At this point I selected everything but for security reason you should just select what you need.

Click "OK"

To get to manage IIS you need to got into the Administration Tools in the control Panel . The easiest way to find that IMHO is change control panel back to Classic View and go through the normal Administration Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager

I add IIS Manager to Quick lanuch to make it more simple to find in the future.
